Dear Friends, Welcome to the current season of Community Concerts at Second. We are a volunteer, non-profit organization whose mission is to strengthen and enrich the Baltimore community by presenting free concerts that showcase our finest local, regional and national artists. Our organization was founded in 1986 by Margaret Budd, a remarkable organist, teacher and humanitarian who envisioned a concert series that would be open to all, free of charge, and would strengthen the bonds of community through the shared experience of music. Aided by a bequest from the Baltimore philanthropist Russell C. Wonderlic and by the generous support of Second Presbyterian Church, the inaugural concert was held in September of that year. Community Concerts at Second is unique in two ways. First, it is unique in that we present artists of national and international stature to the community free of charge. Second, it is unique in the emphasis we place on supporting both established and emerging artists. Here are some examples: * The annual Youth Festival highlights the gifts of the greater Baltimore area’s many promising young musicians. *The annual Principal Chair concert provides an opportunity to hear the talented leaders of our own Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. *The Chamber Music by Candlelight Series features BSO members performing chamber works in an intimate, candlelit setting. This season we present eighteen concerts in the beautiful sanctuary of Second Presbyterian church, which the Baltimore Sun has declared “one of the best acoustics in the city”. All this is made possible by people like you, who both attend our concerts and who contribute energy, time, and resources to assure its continued health and growth. I am so grateful to you for sharing our vision of what a committed community of music lovers and performers can contribute to our city, and the world. Enjoy this website, and make plans now to attend and support many or all of the events described here. It’s your community, and these are your Community Concerts. Sincerely, Laurie Hungerford Flint, President |
