The competition alternates annually between piano and voice, and is open to applicants residing in Maryland or Washington, DC. Non-residents attending schools in Maryland or D.C. are also eligible to apply.

Piano Competition Guidelines

  • The 2010 Wonderlic Piano Competition is for residents of Maryland and the District of Columbia (Washington, D.C.) or non-residents attending schools in Maryland or D.C., and is open to pianists from the ages of 17 to 29. Proof of residency, enrollment or birth date may be required.
  • Applicants must not by under professional management.
  • Prior Wonderlic competition winners are not eligible to enter.
  • A teacher, coach or sponsor is required to sign the application as an endorsement of the applicant.
  • The completed application, a non-refundable application fee of $25 (check or money order) made payable to “Community Concerts at Second”, the selection titles of the program, composer’s names with their birth and death dates and the exact timing of each selection are due postmarked no later than March 26, 2010.
  • Applicants should prepare 30 minutes of piano repertoire representing at least one selection from each of the four periods: Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th Century.
  • In the event one is chosen as a finalist, the repertoire selected by the applicant will be the program for the recital, in whole or in part.
  • With the possible exception of a contemporary work, all selections are to be performed from memory.
  • The competition will take place on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at the Second Presbyterian Church at 4200 St. Paul Street in Baltimore. Upon receipt of approved and completed applications and materials, contestants will be notified by phone or mail regarding their schedule and the amount of time to be heard, and other necessary information that may be helpful.
  • The judges will select one or more finalists who will be eligible for a prize.
  • Prize winners will participate in a recital, solo or joint, depending on the adjudication results, as part of the series: “Community Concerts at Second” at the Second Presbyterian Church on Sunday, April 25, 2010. The recital date is not negotiable.
  • The first prize winner will receive $1,500. The second prize is $1,000.
  • Decisions of the judges will be final.
